Buy Texas Music – Ketch Kennedy

The music has evolved and revolved over time. No one would have expected Ketch to be writing songs, since he was a drummer who couldn’t sing. But he and his college housemate, Ron Waters (see Stories), decided to learn to play guitar. Ketch learned, Ron didn’t. Almost all professional musicians pick up another instrument or more, just because they are there–all the time. Since nobody wanted to hear him sing, he wrote his own songs to make it interesting. They started out really bad, but like most endeavors, they grew over time. While playing drums professionally in a rock band, their folk singer member had a song about something like “Live the life that I sing about”, and that struck a note with Ketch. So he went looking for a life to live, and from living that life, he ended up with a variety of material with which to work. As far as music types, he loved to play really rocking music on drums, but on guitar he was just strumming chords, so the music came out more folksy progressive country. Some early songs were recorded with a steel guitar which made them seem more country than originally intended. Time and technology have provided more opportunities to get closer to the rock roots, and are expected to lead to more interesting music with a chance to develop some percussion concepts that have been lingering in the back roads of his mind.
